Back in 2022 when Turning Red just came out, I became a fan and decided to recreate a scene as a 2D animation. While it is just a 3 second short, due to me doing a bachelor degree delayed the project by 2 to 3 years. This was neither a school assignment or any serious task. This little animation came to be as a fun experimenting project for YouTube.

Throughout these last few years, I have gained new experience in animation and visual art because of my bachelor degree. I got to learn how extremely important it is to use reference. Both for drawing and animating. It was in addition a new thing for me to treat the animatic as a blockout. While the composition and camera angles were taken over from the original clip from the movie, I drew all main poses in the animatic phase.

It was from there where I drew all the face and body parts and drew all the poses for them in the associated graphic symbols like I used to. While animation was done in Adobe Animate, final compositing was done in After Effects while backgrounds were made in Photoshop. The backgrounds consisted of mutiple layers so I was able to add depth of field in After Effects.

Turning Red is property of Pixar and Disney.
